That Silly Little Girl

That silly little girl, so many years ago:
     (what has become of her?)

That silly little girl, the one who wore ribbons
     in her hair to keep the sweat off of her neck,
          can't seem to stay away from the summer's heat.
That silly little girl, who played with sticks
     finally managed to start a bonfire
          but she didn't mean to burn everything to the ground.
That silly little girl, who smiled at her hero,
     realized the faults her idol hid under a mask
          and started recognizing his lies for what they are.
That silly little girl, who sought buried jewels
     accidentally strayed from her treasure map
          and landed in a booby trap of her own making.

That sad little girl shook loose her hair in the dead summer,
     and threw water to drench that all-consuming flame.
          She ripped up the posters of her role model,
               and buried her treasure map with her dreams.
That girl, no longer so little, lost all of her humor.

That silly little girl, so many years ago;
          what's become of me?
